Wood is a natural and organic material. It is influenced by its environment. Kiln or air dried wood both have characteristics such as bowing, checking, cracking, changes in color, splitting, variations by expanding and contracting, movement, warping. Wood may contain certain aged characteristics including but not limited to: color variation, saw marks, dents, scratches, mortise holes, insect holes, staining, tapering, wane etc. These things can happen for multiple reasons including but not limited to moisture/humidity changes and exposure of sunlight.

Humidity is the main reason why real wood tends to crack, split, bow or twist. The reason behind this is that wood, even when dry, has micro vessels that can absorb moisture causing wood to expand (swell) and contract (shrink). This movement overtime can create pressure and develop cracks, splits, bows or twists. Cracking may occur throughout its lifespan. Real wood naturally absorbs moisture within its environment and expands when moisture is high and contracts when moisture is low.

Temperature in itself does not necessarily affect the movement of wood, but usually with higher temperatures comes with higher humidity and the opposite affect when it’s colder. Temperature changes mainly affect wood movement while outdoors when there’s no climate control.

Please understand that our products are made out of natural and real wood. This means that our pieces could potentially crack, shrink, or bow in certain areas over time. This is not necessarily typical or common. However, as with all real wood pieces, it is definitely a possibility. Having said that, it is impossible to guarantee this won’t happen. We want to make it very clear that the potential is always there.

Please note that each item is an original; we hand cut, sand, stain, paint, each item by hand. No two items are exactly the same.

Part of what makes art beautiful lies with each piece’s own unique imperfections and variances, which can include bumps, grooves, nicks, dents, chips, slight indentations, cracks, knots, and workmanship that can tell a story. No finished piece is ever an exact replica of another.

We can not control or guarantee how any product/piece may change in time for any reason. We advise you when possible to keep your wood pieces in consistent, stable conditions to minimize the affects of temperature and moisture change in the atmosphere. Always use protection while keeping hot, cold, or wet materials on the surface. Any spillage of anything should be wiped dry with a soft cloth immediately. Any cleaning needs to be done with a damp/water on a cloth, only. We produce our artistic pieces/products and represent the marketing photos as optimal as possible. XVIIINC LLC or XVIIINC.COM cannot be responsible for the actual degree of variation of colors and sheens that may occur in your custom project. Natural UV light and age will also affect the color and sheen of your custom piece over time.

3.) Care

Our products are fully finished. There is no requirement for any additional finishing with varnish/oils etc. Always use coasters or mats while keeping hot, cold or wet materials on the surface. Any spillage should be wiped dry with a soft cloth immediately. Any cleaning needs to be done with water only. Color/polish can fade due to prolonged exposure to sunlight.

To clean your piece, we recommend dry dusting first. Then if needed, wipe with a slightly damp cloth to clean any minor stains or dust and then use a dry cloth immediately after to fully dry the piece. If you drop a substance on your piece, we recommend wiping with a damp cloth and then again with a dry one. The custom piece is professionally finished. It features a surface which should last for many years to come. We only recommend cleaning your piece using the method above. To preserve your piece we suggest following these instructions.
